Theme: Mercy
“And all that is due to the king, and what should be the king's hereafter, from this present and for ever, is forgiven thee.”
Reflection for Today
The Church sets before us 1 Maccabees 15:8: “And all that is due to the king, and what should be the king's hereafter, from this present and for ever, is forgiven thee.”
Mercy is the place where Catholic life becomes most concrete: Confession, patience at home, and the decision not to keep score forever. 1 Maccabees, received in the Catholic canon, shows courage, fidelity, and providence when God's people are tested.
God often changes us less by thunder and more by a line of Scripture that will not leave us alone. Pray a decade of the Rosary with this verse in mind. Ask Mary to teach you how to keep God's word and ponder it, as she did.
Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit. Open the Scriptures to me as You opened them to the apostles. In 1 Maccabees 15:8 I hear, “And all that is due to the king, and what should be the king's hereafter, from this…” Give me understanding, give me desire, and give me the grace to obey with joy. Amen.
