Origen of Alexandria

Origen was born around 184 AD in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Christian family. His father, Leonidas, was a devout Christian who ensured his son received both a classical Greek education and deep formation in Scripture. When Origen was about seventeen, his father was martyred during the persecution of Emperor Septimius Severus. The young Origen reportedly wanted to give himself up for martyrdom alongside his father, but his mother hid his clothes to prevent him from leaving the house.

After his father's martyrdom, Origen became the head of the Catechetical School of Alexandria at the remarkably young age of eighteen. He proved an extraordinarily gifted teacher, drawing students from across the Roman world. He lived an ascetical life of great simplicity, sleeping on the floor, fasting frequently, and devoting enormous energy to study and prayer.

Origen's scholarly output was extraordinary. Ancient sources credit him with writing as many as 6,000 works, though most have been lost. He wrote extensive commentaries on nearly every book of Scripture, systematic theological treatises, apologetic works, and practical guides to the Christian life. His Hexapla, a massive critical edition of the Old Testament presenting six versions in parallel columns, was a monument of ancient scholarship.

In 215 AD, Origen traveled to Rome, then to Palestine, where bishops invited him to preach despite not being ordained. This caused conflict with his bishop, Demetrius of Alexandria. Around 230 AD, Origen was ordained a priest by bishops in Palestine, which led to his formal condemnation and exile by Demetrius. He settled in Caesarea Maritima (Palestine), where he continued his prolific writing and teaching.

During the persecution of Emperor Decius (250–251 AD), Origen was arrested, imprisoned, and subjected to prolonged torture in an attempt to make him apostatize. He refused to deny his faith. Though he survived the immediate persecution, the effects of his sufferings led to his death around 253 AD in Tyre. He is thus considered by many to be a confessor of the faith, one who suffered greatly for Christ without technically dying as a martyr.
