📖 Life of St. Louise de Marillac

St. Louise de Marillac was born on August 12, 1591, in Paris, France. She was the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman and spent her early life in uncertainty and hardship. Despite her difficult beginnings, she received an excellent education and grew in deep piety.

Louise wished to enter the Capuchin sisters but was advised against it on grounds of health. Instead, she married Antoine Le Gras in 1613 and bore him a son, Michel. Her marriage was difficult; her husband suffered from chronic illness, and Louise experienced periods of profound spiritual darkness and scrupulosity.

After her husband's death in 1625, Louise came under the spiritual direction of St. Vincent de Paul, who helped her overcome her spiritual anxieties and discern her true vocation. Together, they founded the Daughters of Charity in 1633, a revolutionary new form of religious life that took sisters out of the cloister and into the streets to serve the poor.

Louise organized and trained the Daughters to serve in hospitals, orphanages, prisons, and schools. She was a brilliant administrator who combined deep prayer with practical service. Under her leadership, the Daughters spread throughout France, caring for the sick, the orphaned, the elderly, and the poor.

Louise died on March 15, 1660, just a few months before St. Vincent de Paul. She was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1920 and canonized in 1934. In 1960, she was declared patron saint of social workers by Pope John XXIII.
