Novena for a Job – Day 8: Work as Service
Join in praying the Novena for a Job to seek honest work, perseverance, and God's provision.
Today's Focus: Work as Service
On this eighth day we pray that the work we find would serve others. Hidden work done well is already an apostolate. We ask not only for a job, but for a way to love our neighbor through it.
Prayer for Day 8
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Heavenly Father, your Son came not to be served but to serve. Whatever work you give us, let it be a way of washing feet: useful, honest, and offered to you.
Let our labor be charity in working clothes.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.
Heavenly Father, make our work service! Deliver us from a career that is only self. Show us how this job, or the next, can help a family, a customer, a patient, a student, or the poor.
We also pray for these intentions… (State your need for work here)
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be
St. Martin de Porres, humble worker, pray for us!
Reflection for Today
Today we pray that work would be service. Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not men." The audience of your labor is God, even when the paycheck comes from someone else.
A Christian does not need a "ministry job" in order to have a vocation. Teaching, driving, coding, cleaning, farming, nursing, and keeping books can all be offered. The altar of the world is often a desk or a sink.
Ask today: whom would this job serve? If the answer is only yourself, keep praying. If the answer includes neighbor and family, you are close to the Church's idea of work.
Service also means how you will treat coworkers. A saint in a warehouse is worth more than a cynic in a pulpit. Pray for the people you have not yet met, who will share your days.
Remember that the first apostolate is faithfulness in small things. If God gives you a modest post, it is not a demotion in the kingdom.
How to Make an Excellent Novena
Trust in God
Trust completely in God's ability to provide work in His time. Turn to Him with confidence in every interview, delay, and closed door.
Be Persistent
Pray this novena with persistence and keep looking for work. Prayer and effort belong together. God will not fail those who turn to Him with trust.
Be Specific
Present your specific need: a position, a just wage, a next interview, or the grace to stay in a hard job. God wants to help you with the particular difficulty you face.
Be Grateful
Thank God for skills you already have, for work you have done, and for daily bread so far. Gratitude opens the heart to receive more graces.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, make our work a service of love. Let every task we are given be done for you and for our neighbor, whether it is seen or hidden. Amen.
