Theme: Daily Scripture
“Now there was in that place a tower fifty cubits high, having a heap of ashes on every side: this had a prospect steep down.”
Reflection for Today
Pause with 2 Maccabees 13:5. Hear these words again: “Now there was in that place a tower fifty cubits high, having a heap of ashes on every side: this had a prospect steep down.”
The Catholic way of reading is never solitary for long. We read with the Church, with the saints, and with the poor Christ still loves. 2 Maccabees, received in the Catholic canon, shows courage, fidelity, and providence when God's people are tested.
God often changes us less by thunder and more by a line of Scripture that will not leave us alone. If the verse consoles you, do not rush past the comfort. Gratitude is also a form of obedience.
Prayer
Father of mercies, I bring You this day and this verse from 2 Maccabees 13:5. As I listen to “Now there was in that place a tower fifty cubits high, having a heap of ashes on…,” heal what is anxious in me, correct what is proud, and strengthen what is willing to love. Amen.
