Theme: Mercy
“Now when Machabeus had gathered a multitude, he could not be withstood by the heathens: for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy.”
Reflection for Today
Let 2 Maccabees 8:5 speak first, before our plans and worries do: “Now when Machabeus had gathered a multitude, he could not be withstood by the heathens: for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy.”
If this verse tastes like mercy, let it search you kindly. Where do you need forgiveness, and where are you being asked to give it? 2 Maccabees, received in the Catholic canon, shows courage, fidelity, and providence when God's people are tested.
As you hold this verse, do not force a dramatic feeling. Ask only for faithfulness. If the verse consoles you, do not rush past the comfort. Gratitude is also a form of obedience.
Prayer
Father of mercies, I bring You this day and this verse from 2 Maccabees 8:5. As I listen to “Now when Machabeus had gathered a multitude, he could not be withstood by the…,” heal what is anxious in me, correct what is proud, and strengthen what is willing to love. Amen.
