“For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for the calf of Samaria shall be turned to spiders' webs.”
Reflection for Today
Today's Catholic verse of the day is Hosea 8:6: “For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for the calf of Samaria shall be turned to spiders' webs.”
Scripture rarely flatters us. It loves us enough to tell the truth, and then it stays with us while we learn to live that truth. In Hosea, the prophetic word unsettles comfort and awakens hope. God loves His people enough to call them back, and enough to promise a future.
God often changes us less by thunder and more by a line of Scripture that will not leave us alone. Pray a decade of the Rosary with this verse in mind. Ask Mary to teach you how to keep God's word and ponder it, as she did.
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for speaking through Hosea 8:6. You said, “For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for…” I do not want to rush past these words. Quiet my mind, warm my heart, and help me live what I have heard with faith, hope, and charity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
