Theme: Mercy
Forgiveness & MercyFamilyGratitude
“And returning home, they sung a hymn, and blessed God in heaven, because he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever.”
Reflection for Today
The Church sets before us 1 Maccabees 4:24: “And returning home, they sung a hymn, and blessed God in heaven, because he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever.”
1 Maccabees, received in the Catholic canon, shows courage, fidelity, and providence when God's people are tested. Mercy is the place where Catholic life becomes most concrete: Confession, patience at home, and the decision not to keep score forever.
If nothing else remains from this page, let one phrase of 1 Maccabees 4:24 remain. If the verse convicts you, do not panic. Take it to Confession when you can, or begin with an honest Act of Contrition tonight.
Prayer
Father of mercies, I bring You this day and this verse from 1 Maccabees 4:24. As I listen to “And returning home, they sung a hymn, and blessed God in heaven, because he is good,…,” heal what is anxious in me, correct what is proud, and strengthen what is willing to love. Amen.
