Reflection for Today
Let 1 Maccabees 3:10 speak first, before our plans and worries do: “And Apollonius gathered together the Gentiles, and a numerous and great army from Samaria, to make war against Israel.”
Scripture rarely flatters us. It loves us enough to tell the truth, and then it stays with us while we learn to live that truth. 1 Maccabees, received in the Catholic canon, shows courage, fidelity, and providence when God's people are tested.
As you hold this verse, do not force a dramatic feeling. Ask only for faithfulness. Pray a decade of the Rosary with this verse in mind. Ask Mary to teach you how to keep God's word and ponder it, as she did.
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for speaking through 1 Maccabees 3:10. You said, “And Apollonius gathered together the Gentiles, and a numerous and great army from…” I do not want to rush past these words. Quiet my mind, warm my heart, and help me live what I have heard with faith, hope, and charity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
