On December 8, 2026, Catholics in the United States celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception—a holy day of obligation and the patronal feast of the United States under Mary’s title. The feast honors Mary’s preservation from original sin from the first moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, St. Anne.

This is not the conception of Jesus. The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary, prepared by grace to become the Mother of God.

When Is the Immaculate Conception 2026?

December 8 every year. In 2026, it falls on a Tuesday. U.S. Catholics are normally bound to attend Mass (check your diocese for any transfer if it coincides with a Sunday—December 8, 2026 is a weekday).

Catholic Doctrine in Plain Language

Pope Pius IX defined the dogma in 1854 (Ineffabilis Deus): Mary, by a singular grace, was preserved from all stain of original sin from her conception. She still needed a Savior—Christ saved her preventively by grace, as a person saved from drowning before falling into the river.

Scriptural foundations read in Tradition include Genesis 3:15 (the woman and the serpent) and Mary’s holiness in Luke 1:28 (“full of grace”).
