The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe—Christ the King—closes the liturgical year by proclaiming that Jesus reigns over every nation, conscience, and hidden corner of history. In 2026, this solemnity falls on Sunday, November 22, the last Sunday before Advent begins on November 29.

Christ the King is not political triumphalism. It is the faith of the Church: the crucified and risen Lord is judge and shepherd, and every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth (Philippians 2:10–11).

When Is Christ the King in 2026?

Christ the King is celebrated on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time—immediately before the First Sunday of Advent. In 2026:

  • Christ the King: Sunday, November 22, 2026
  • First Sunday of Advent: November 29, 2026

It is a solemnity. When celebrated on Sunday, it replaces the usual Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is not a separate holy day of obligation beyond Sunday Mass in the United States.

What the Feast Means

Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 (Quas primas) amid rising secular ideologies. The Church wanted Catholics to remember that:

  • Christ’s kingdom is spiritual — born in hearts through grace and the Eucharist
  • His rule is just — He judges with truth and mercy
  • His power is seen on the Cross — kingship through self-giving love
  • History has a Lord — no empire, economy, or culture is ultimate

How to Celebrate November 22, 2026

  1. Attend Mass and listen for the Gospel of the King.
  2. Examine conscience — does Christ reign in your finances, speech, and media use?
  3. Perform a work of mercy — Matthew 25 shows where the King is found.
  4. Begin preparing for Advent — see Christmas Advent Novena.
  5. Pray for leaders — civil authority is ordered to the common good under God.

Prayer to Christ the King

Almighty ever-living God, whose Only Begotten Son purchased us and made us a kingdom of priests to serve God our Father, grant that we may reign with Christ in this world and share His eternal kingship in heaven. Amen.
