St. Sebastian
Roman Soldier and Martyr, Patron of Athletes
📖 Life of St. Sebastian
St. Sebastian was born in the 3rd century in Narbonne, Gaul (modern France), into a noble family. He was raised in Milan, Italy, and from an early age showed great promise as a soldier. He joined the Roman army and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a captain of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian. Despite his high position in the Roman military, Sebastian was a secret Christian who used his influence to help persecuted Christians.
As a member of the Praetorian Guard, Sebastian had access to the imperial palace and used his position to minister to Christians who were imprisoned for their faith. He provided them with food, comfort, and encouragement, often visiting them in secret. His Christian faith remained hidden from his fellow soldiers and superiors, allowing him to continue his ministry of mercy while serving in the Roman army.
Sebastian's secret was eventually discovered, and he was brought before Emperor Diocletian. The emperor, who was known for his persecution of Christians, was furious that one of his trusted guards was a Christian. Diocletian ordered Sebastian to be tied to a tree and shot with arrows. The soldiers left him for dead, but miraculously, Sebastian survived his wounds and was nursed back to health by a Christian widow named Irene.
After his recovery, Sebastian boldly confronted Emperor Diocletian, publicly professing his faith and rebuking the emperor for his persecution of Christians. This act of courage sealed his fate. Diocletian ordered Sebastian to be beaten to death with clubs. He was martyred around 288 AD and his body was thrown into the Cloaca Maxima (the main sewer of Rome). His feast day is celebrated on January 20th.
