St. Philip Benizi

Philip Benizi was born in 1233 in Florence, Italy. He studied medicine and philosophy before joining the Servite Order (Order of Friar Servants of Mary), founded to honor the Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He became one of the greatest leaders and reformers of the congregation.

When the papal throne became vacant in 1271, Philip was proposed as pope. To avoid the honor, he went into hiding until another candidate was elected — a striking example of evangelical humility. He later served as superior general and renewed the Servite charism through preaching, penance, and care for the sick.

Philip died on August 22, 1285, at Todi. He was canonized in 1671. His life inspires those called to leadership through service, especially in Marian devotion and reconciliation. He is linked in devotion to healing saints such as St. Peregrine.
