πŸ“– Life of St. Lucy Filippini

St. Lucy Filippini was born at Corneto (Tarquinia) in 1672 and orphaned young. Cardinal Mark Anthony Barbarigo saw in her a teacher, not a court ornament. With Blessed Rose Venerini she took up the work of schools for poor girls: reading, the catechism, and the skills that would keep a Christian household.

In 1692 the first school opened. Lucy spent the rest of her life founding and visiting schools in the Papal States, forming the Religious Teachers Filippini so that the work would outlive her. She was not St. Lucy of Syracuse, the virgin-martyr of December 13. She is a modern foundress who believed that ignorant faith is a wound the Church must not leave untreated.

She died at Montefiascone on March 25, 1732 β€” the Annunciation. Clement XII and later popes protected the institute. Pius XI canonized her in 1930. The schools still exist, on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Church commemorates her on March 25, the day of her death and of Mary's yes. A teacher's death on the Annunciation is itself a sermon: every child taught the Hail Mary is a small incarnation of that yes.

Schools for the Poor

She did not wait for a university. Girls who would never see a convent still needed the Creed. Catholic education is not only colleges.

A Foundress, Not a Duplicate Lucy

The Syracuse martyr and the Montefiascone teacher share a name and nothing else. This page exists so the educator is not swallowed by December 13.

Rose and Lucy

Venerini began; Filippini organized and multiplied. The Church often needs two women where the world wants a single heroine.

What Her Life Teaches

Orphans can become foundresses. A cardinal who looks for teachers rather than nieces is already a reform. And March 25 is a good day to die if your life was a long Annunciation in classrooms.

πŸ™ Prayers

Prayer to St. Lucy Filippini

O St. Lucy Filippini, you spent yourself so that poor girls might know the Creed and a Christian home. You died on the Annunciation, as if your classroom had been a long yes.

Obtain for us teachers who love the poor, congregations that do not forget the parish, and children who learn to pray. Amen.
