St. Germanus of Auxerre

Germanus was born around 378 in Auxerre, Gaul, to a noble family. After a distinguished legal career and marriage, he was ordained and eventually became Bishop of Auxerre around 418. He gave his wealth to the poor and devoted himself entirely to the Church.

He is best remembered for two missions to Britain to combat Pelagianism, where he led the famous “Alleluia victory” at Mold in Wales. In Nanterre he met the young St. Genevieve, encouraged her consecration to God, and became her spiritual father. He also guided St. Patrick in his early formation.

Germanus died at Ravenna in 448 while pleading for the people before the imperial court. He was buried in Auxerre, and his intercession has been sought for centuries across France and Britain.
