St. Fintan of Munnu (Kiara)
Irish Abbot, Founder of Taghmon Monastery, Celtic Saint
📖 Life of St. Fintan of Munnu
St. Fintan of Munnu, also known as Fintán mac Tulcháin, was born around 555 AD in Leinster, Ireland. He was a disciple of St. Comgall of Bangor and received his formation at the great school of Bangor, one of the most important monastic centers in early Christian Ireland.
Desiring to study under the great St. Columba of Iona, Fintan traveled to that famous island monastery. However, he arrived after Columba had already died. Rather than return home, Fintan applied to become a monk of Iona, but he was turned away with the message that God had other plans for him in Ireland.
Returning to Ireland, Fintan founded the great monastery of Taghmon (Tech Munnu, meaning "House of Munnu") in County Wexford around 598 AD. "Munnu" was his affectionate nickname among the Irish people. The monastery became an important center of learning, prayer, and mission in Leinster.
Fintan was known for following the older Celtic customs, particularly regarding the dating of Easter. During the Synod of Mag Léne in 630 AD, he famously defended the Celtic tradition against the Roman custom, though the Roman practice ultimately prevailed throughout the Western Church.
Despite suffering from leprosy in his later years, Fintan continued to lead his community until his death around 635 AD. He is remembered for his holiness, his learning, and his steadfast character. His feast is celebrated on October 21st.
