📖 Life of St. Charles Lwanga

St. Charles Lwanga was a court page in Buganda, head of King Mwanga II's pages, when the baptism of the court youth became a death sentence. Mwanga, who had first tolerated the missionaries, turned on the Christians in 1885–1886: he would not have pages who refused his lust and who answered to a higher King.

Lwanga had been a catechumen under Joseph Mkasa. When Mkasa was beheaded, Lwanga took his place as protector of the boys. He baptized the youngest, including St. Kizito, on the night before the march to Namugongo. He kept them from the king's household as a father keeps children from a wolf.

On June 3, 1886, he was separated from the others and burned alive. Witnesses said he asked them not to pour the fire at his feet only, but to let him burn as a whole offering. He was about twenty-five. Twenty-one other Catholics and a number of Anglicans died in the same persecution. Paul VI canonized the Catholic martyrs in 1964.

The Church commemorates Charles and his companions on June 3. Namugongo is now one of the great pilgrimage places of Africa. He is patron of African youth and of those who defend the purity of the young.

🌟 Legacy of St. Charles Lwanga

A Lay Leader

He was not a priest. He was a head page who became a catechist with his blood. The African Church was already producing fathers before it had many dioceses.

Purity and Courage

The persecution was about baptism and about the king's claim on the boys' bodies. Lwanga is invoked wherever the young are used. That is not a modern reading. It is why he died.

Namugongo

A place of execution became a basilica. Every June, hundreds of thousands walk there. Martyrdom is not an ending when a people remember.

What His Life Teaches

You can be twenty-five, employed in a corrupt court, and still be the one who baptizes the children and walks first into the fire. Holiness does not wait for better working conditions.
