The Joyful Mysteries: The Annunciation
The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin named Mary. "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" Mary was troubled at his words, but the angel said, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. You will conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus."
Mary asked, "How can this be, since I have no husband?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God."
And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."
Reflection: In this mystery, we contemplate Mary's perfect faith and obedience. She did not fully understand what was being asked of her, but she trusted God completely. Her "yes" changed the course of human history.
We too are called to say "yes" to God's will, even when we don't understand. Like Mary, we can trust that God's plans for us are good, even when they seem impossible.
