Psalms for Today

by Catholic Bible Online

The Psalms have been the prayer book of God's people for three thousand years. Jesus prayed them, Mary sang them, and the Church continues to pray them daily in the Liturgy of the Hours. These reflections help you enter into the Psalms and make them your own prayer.

Psalm 23: The Lord Is My Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

This beloved psalm paints a picture of God as a caring shepherd who provides for all our needs. In ancient Israel, shepherds were responsible for finding pasture, water, and protection for their flocks. God does all this and more for us.

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.

Notice that the shepherd makes the sheep lie down. Sometimes we need to be made to rest. God knows when we need refreshment and restoration, even when we don't.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

The shepherd doesn't promise to keep us from dark valleys, but to be with us through them. His presence is our comfort and protection.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
