Mary, Mother of God
The Council of Ephesus in 431 AD declared Mary to be Theotokos—the God-bearer, the Mother of God. This title is not primarily about Mary but about Jesus: He is truly God, and Mary is truly His mother.
When Elizabeth greeted Mary, she exclaimed: "Why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" Elizabeth recognized that Mary carried within her womb the Lord Himself.
Mary's divine motherhood is the source of all her privileges and the foundation of our devotion to her. Because she is the Mother of God, she is also our mother, given to us by Jesus from the Cross.
St. Cyril of Alexandria wrote: "Hail, Mary, Mother of God, venerable treasure of the whole world... through whom the Holy Trinity is glorified and worshipped."
