Comfort in Grief

by Catholic Bible Online

Grief is one of the most painful experiences in life. This devotional offers daily comfort from Scripture, the saints, and Catholic tradition for those who mourn. May you find consolation in Christ, who wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus and who promises to wipe away every tear.

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

Jesus does not say, "Blessed are those who don't mourn" or "Blessed are those who get over it quickly." He says those who mourn are blessed—and they will be comforted.

Grief is not a sign of weak faith. It is a sign of deep love. We grieve because we have loved, and love is never wasted.

The comfort Jesus promises is not a quick fix. It is His presence with us in our pain, His grace sustaining us day by day, and His promise of reunion in eternal life.

St. Augustine, after his mother's death, wrote: "I wept for my mother... Let anyone who wishes condemn me. But if he has great charity, let him weep for my sins before You, the Father of all."

It is okay to weep. Jesus wept too.

🙏 Prayer

Lord Jesus, You promised comfort to those who mourn. I bring my grief to You. Hold me in my pain. Give me hope in the midst of sorrow. Amen.
