Venerable Fulton Sheen

by Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1895-1979) was a pioneer of religious broadcasting, reaching millions through radio and television. His wit, wisdom, and ability to explain the faith made him one of the most influential Catholics of the 20th century. His cause for canonization is underway.

The Purpose of Life

"Life is worth living" was the title of Fulton Sheen's famous television program. But what makes life worth living? Sheen had a clear answer: knowing, loving, and serving God.

"The big print giveth and the fine print taketh away. The big print of life says: 'You are free.' The fine print says: 'You are responsible.'"

Sheen understood that modern people are searching for meaning. We have more comforts than any generation in history, yet we are often unhappy. Why? Because we have forgotten our purpose.

"There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be."

Our purpose is to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him in this life, and to be happy with Him forever in the next. Everything else is secondary.
