Theme: Daily Scripture
“And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.”
Reflection for Today
The Church sets before us Matthew 20:22: “And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.”
Matthew does not give us a distant memory of Jesus. It places us in His company, where every word can become prayer. The Catholic way of reading is never solitary for long. We read with the Church, with the saints, and with the poor Christ still loves.
As you hold this verse, do not force a dramatic feeling. Ask only for faithfulness. If the verse convicts you, do not panic. Take it to Confession when you can, or begin with an honest Act of Contrition tonight.
Prayer
Father of mercies, I bring You this day and this verse from Matthew 20:22. As I listen to “And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that…,” heal what is anxious in me, correct what is proud, and strengthen what is willing to love. Amen.
