Theme: Family
“Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayst be longlived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee.”
Reflection for Today
Let Exodus 20:12 speak first, before our plans and worries do: “Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayst be longlived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee.”
Scripture rarely flatters us. It loves us enough to tell the truth, and then it stays with us while we learn to live that truth. Exodus is part of the long story of salvation. Catholics receive it as inspired Scripture, a word that prepares the heart for Christ and still nourishes the Church.
God often changes us less by thunder and more by a line of Scripture that will not leave us alone. Before the day runs away, sit with this verse for two quiet minutes. Say it slowly. Notice which word stays warm in the heart, and carry that word into one conversation.
Prayer
Father of mercies, I bring You this day and this verse from Exodus 20:12. As I listen to “Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayst be longlived upon the land which…,” heal what is anxious in me, correct what is proud, and strengthen what is willing to love. Amen.
