Theme: Light of the World
“Woe to them that desire the day of the Lord: to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.”
Reflection for Today
Pause with Amos 5:18. Hear these words again: “Woe to them that desire the day of the Lord: to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.”
The Catholic way of reading is never solitary for long. We read with the Church, with the saints, and with the poor Christ still loves. In Amos, the prophetic word unsettles comfort and awakens hope. God loves His people enough to call them back, and enough to promise a future.
If nothing else remains from this page, let one phrase of Amos 5:18 remain. Before the day runs away, sit with this verse for two quiet minutes. Say it slowly. Notice which word stays warm in the heart, and carry that word into one conversation.
Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit. Open the Scriptures to me as You opened them to the apostles. In Amos 5:18 I hear, “Woe to them that desire the day of the Lord: to what end is it for you? the day of…” Give me understanding, give me desire, and give me the grace to obey with joy. Amen.
