But I with the voice of praise will sacrifice to thee: I will pay whatsoever I have vowed for my salvation to the Lord.

Jonah 2:10

Reflection for Today

The Church sets before us Jonah 2:10: “But I with the voice of praise will sacrifice to thee: I will pay whatsoever I have vowed for my salvation to the Lord.”

In Jonah, the prophetic word unsettles comfort and awakens hope. God loves His people enough to call them back, and enough to promise a future. The Catholic way of reading is never solitary for long. We read with the Church, with the saints, and with the poor Christ still loves.

As you hold this verse, do not force a dramatic feeling. Ask only for faithfulness. If the verse convicts you, do not panic. Take it to Confession when you can, or begin with an honest Act of Contrition tonight.

Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Open the Scriptures to me as You opened them to the apostles. In Jonah 2:10 I hear, “But I with the voice of praise will sacrifice to thee: I will pay whatsoever I have…” Give me understanding, give me desire, and give me the grace to obey with joy. Amen.
