St. Faustina Kowalska’s feast day is October 5. In 2026 it falls on Monday. She is the Apostle of Divine Mercy: the Polish sister to whom Jesus entrusted the image “Jesus, I trust in You,” the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the 3:00 p.m. Hour of Mercy, and the feast of Mercy on the Sunday after Easter. October 5 is the day she died in Kraków in 1938. It is not Divine Mercy Sunday.

When Is St. Faustina’s Feast Day?
October 5 every year. In 2026 that is Monday, October 5. Pope Francis inscribed her in the General Roman Calendar on 18 May 2020 as an optional memorial. Parishes may celebrate her Mass; they are not bound to. It is not a holy day of obligation in the United States.
People mix this date with Divine Mercy Sunday because both belong to her mission. Keep them straight:
| What you searched | The date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| St. Faustina feast day | October 5 (Monday in 2026) | Optional memorial of her death and witness |
| Divine Mercy Sunday | Sunday after Easter (12 April 2026; 18 April 2027) | The feast Jesus asked for in the Diary |
| Hour of Mercy | 3:00 p.m. every day | The hour of the death of Christ |
| Divine Mercy Novena | Good Friday through Divine Mercy Saturday | Nine days Jesus asked Faustina to pray |
The English Collect for her Mass, confirmed for the United States, asks that we “fully trust in your goodness and generously perform works of charity.” Trust and mercy in act — not a slogan.
Who Was St. Faustina Kowalska?
Helena Kowalska was born 25 August 1905 in Głogowiec, near Łódź, Poland, the third of ten children in a poor, believing family. She had little schooling. She worked as a domestic servant. At seven she felt a call during adoration. Her parents could not spare her. In 1924, in a dance hall in Łódź, she saw the suffering Christ asking how long she would keep Him waiting. She left for Warsaw.
On 1 August 1925 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. She received the name Sister Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament. For thirteen years she cooked, gardened, and kept the door in houses of the congregation — Warsaw, Płock, Vilnius, Kraków. Superiors saw a simple, sometimes sick sister. Jesus saw a secretary.
She died of tuberculosis on 5 October 1938 in Kraków, at Łagiewniki, aged thirty-three. Karol Wojtyła, as Archbishop of Kraków, opened her cause. As Pope St. John Paul II he beatified her on 18 April 1993 and canonized her on 30 April 2000 — Divine Mercy Sunday — and established that Sunday for the whole Church. Faustina was among the patrons of the Jubilee of Mercy. Read his life: St. John Paul II.

The Message: Mercy Is Greater Than Sin
Divine Mercy is not a private hobby. It is the Gospel with the wounds still visible. After the Resurrection, Jesus shows His hands and side and says, “Peace be to you” (John 20:19–23). Faustina’s mission is that peace for a century that had forgotten it.
In the Diary Jesus says the greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to mercy (Diary 1146). That line is why people still search her name when they are ashamed to search “confession.” No sin outruns the Blood. The condition is trust — not a feeling, a decision: Jesus, I trust in You.
John Paul II said at her canonization that the message is not new. It is a light so that the Easter Gospel can be believed again. He also recalled the Lord’s word through her: mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to His mercy. That is why her feast belongs in October 2026 as much as it belonged between the wars.
Mercy received must be given. “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). The Church’s corporal works are listed here: corporal works of mercy · spiritual works of mercy.
The Divine Mercy Image: “Jesus, I Trust in You”
On 22 February 1931, in Płock, Jesus appeared as the Merciful Savior, one hand raised in blessing, the other opening the garment at the Heart, with two rays — pale and red. He told her to paint the image according to the pattern she saw, signed Jesus, I trust in You (Diary 47).
He later explained the rays (Diary 299): the pale ray is the Water that makes souls righteous; the red ray is the Blood that is the life of souls. They came from the Heart opened on the Cross (John 19:34). The image is not a mascot. It is a claim: the font of Baptism and the Eucharist still pours.
The first painting was made in Vilnius in 1934 by Eugeniusz Kazimirowski, under Faustina and her confessor Blessed Michał Sopoćko. The better-known Kraków image by Adolf Hyła (1943) was painted after her death for Łagiewniki. Either image is venerated; the promise is attached to the image of Mercy, not to a brand of canvas. Put it where you will actually pray — not where it becomes wallpaper.
The Chaplet, the Hour, and the Novena
Jesus taught Faustina the Chaplet in Vilnius on 13–14 September 1935 (Diary 476). It is prayed on ordinary Rosary beads: an offering of Christ’s Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity to the Father, then “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion…” If you need the beads in order, use the Chaplet page or the full 2026 Chaplet guide. Opening prayers: Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles’ Creed.
The Hour of Mercy is 3:00 p.m. — the hour Jesus died. You do not need a full Chaplet if you have one minute. Immerse yourself in the Passion, even briefly, and ask mercy for the world (Diary 1320). Set an alarm. That is the most Faustina thing you can do on a workday feast.
The Divine Mercy Novena is not an October novena. Jesus asked her to begin it on Good Friday, a different intention each day, ending on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday. You may pray it at other times. Do not tell readers that October 5 starts it. It does not.
The Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul
Under obedience Faustina wrote notebooks now published as Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul. She had three years of school. The prose is not academic. It is a record of prayer, darkness, obedience, and the Lord’s own words as she received them. The Church does not ask you to treat every line as a new public revelation equal to Scripture. She asks you to receive a charism that serves the Gospel already given.
Read it the way you would sit with a sister who has seen too much suffering to lie. Then open the Bible she lived from: the prodigal Father in Luke 15, the love that surpasses knowledge in Ephesians 3:14–19 (a reading the Holy See recommends for her memorial), and the childlike revelation of Matthew 11:25–30 — “Come to me, all you that labour.” In the Douay-Rheims numbering used on this site, the psalm of blessing the Lord who crowns you with mercy is Psalm 102 (Psalm 103 in Hebrew numbering).
How to Celebrate October 5, 2026
- Go to Mass if your parish keeps the optional memorial. If not, hear Monday’s Mass and add her Collect in private: trust, then works of charity.
- Pray the Chaplet at 3:00 p.m., or at least a minute of the Hour of Mercy: Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
- Make a confession if you are carrying something you have named to everyone except a priest. Mercy has a sacrament. Act of Contrition.
- Do one work of mercy that costs you. A text is not nothing. A visit, a debt forgiven, food given, a name spoken to God for an enemy is closer to her Diary.
- Say the invocation. Out loud: Jesus, I trust in You. Once is enough if you mean it.
- Ask her intercession with the prayer to St. Faustina.
If you cannot do six things, do the hour and the sentence. Faustina’s whole spirituality fits in a kitchen at three o’clock.
Readings and the Prayer of the Church
For the optional memorial, the Missal allows the Common of Virgins or of Holy Men and Women (For Religious). The Holy See also recommends:
- First reading: Ephesians 3:14–19 — to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge
- Psalm: Psalm 102 (103) — Bless the Lord, O my soul
- Gospel: Matthew 11:25–30 — revealed to little ones; come to me, you who labor
Collect. O God, who entrusted Saint Faustina with spreading the immense riches of your infinite mercy, grant, at her intercession, that after her example we may fully trust in your goodness and generously perform works of charity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
John Paul II closed his canonization homily with her hymn: “I will sing for ever of the mercies of the Lord” — Psalm 88 (89) in the numbering of this Bible.
A Prayer You Can Use Today
St. Faustina, Apostle of Divine Mercy, you cooked, answered the door, and wrote what you were told. Ask for us the grace to trust when we would rather hide. Obtain mercy for the dying, for those who think they are too late, and for those of us who say the words and still clutch the sin. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is St. Faustina’s feast day in 2026?
Monday, October 5, 2026. The date is fixed. The weekday changes each year.
Is October 5 Divine Mercy Sunday?
No. Divine Mercy Sunday is the Sunday after Easter. In 2026 it was 12 April. In 2027 it is 18 April. October 5 honors Faustina herself.
What is St. Faustina the patron of?
She is invoked as the Apostle of Divine Mercy — for trust in God, for the conversion of sinners, and for those who spread this devotion. She is a great saint of Poland. She is not a substitute for Confession, and she is not a mascot for feeling spiritual.
How do you pray on her feast day?
Mass if you can, the Chaplet at 3:00 p.m., one concrete mercy, and the words Jesus, I trust in You. Details: Chaplet · her prayer.
Where are her relics?
At the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki, in the convent of her congregation. You do not have to go to Poland to keep the feast.
Did the Church approve the Diary and the image?
Yes, after investigation. There was a period of confusion in the 1950s when a notification restricted the spreading of the devotion in the form then known; it was not a condemnation of Faustina’s holiness. Kraków’s archbishop, then Karol Wojtyła, advanced her cause. The Holy See later permitted and promoted the devotion. Her canonization and the feast of Mercy are the Church’s answer.
What is the difference between this guide and her saint page?
This page is the 2026 feast-day article — date, liturgy, how to keep today, FAQ. /saints/st-faustina/ is the standing biography. Neither URL has changed.

Trust Him Today
St. Faustina did not invent mercy. She refused to let the twentieth century bury it. On 5 October 2026 the Church names her in the calendar so that a cook and porter can still teach bishops how to hope. Say the words. Mean them. Then go do one merciful thing before the day is over.
Jesus, I trust in You.
