A collect you can use today asks that we follow St. Emma as countess of Bremen and benefactress of churches in Saxony — not as a slogan, as a life.

Who Was St. Emma?

Emma was born about 975, daughter of Count Immed of Saxony, and married Count Liudger, son of St. Ludger's family line. After Liudger died, she managed estates at Lesum near Bremen, endowing churches and monasteries including Bremen Cathedral improvements. Her son Adalbold became Bishop of Utrecht; she corresponded with emperors Henry II and Conrad II.

She died on December 3, 1038, at Bremen. Feast December 3 with shared date traditions locally.

Little specific information about St. Emma survives. Legend states that she had a violent temper when she was young. Emma's husband made a visit to Russia in 1011, fell ill and died. Following this tragedy, Emma withdrew into her faith. Her temperament became mild. She was a great benefactor of churches, establishing many small parishes. She donated to the Bremen Cathedral. Her concern for the poor was legendary.

After her death, she was buried in a tomb in Bremen Cathedral. Her tomb was opened and her body had turned to dust except for her right hand, which she used to give gifts. Her intact hand was sent to the abbey of St. Ludger at Werden.

On December 3 the Church is not archiving a celebrity. She is putting St. Emma in front of you as countess of Bremen and benefactress of churches in Saxony. Read the dates. Then pray. The standing biography remains at St. Emma — life, legacy, and feast. That URL is unchanged.

A Carinthian Widow Who Founded Gurk

St. Emma is remembered as Countess of Bremen and benefactress of churches in Saxony. Widows with wealth can reshape cities through cathedral building and almsgiving.

Emma of Lesum rebuilt Bremen's cathedral and fed the poor after widowhood. She was mother to an archbishop and aunt to emperors yet kept prayer at the center of Saxon politics. Medieval Bremen remembered her as mother of the city.

Emma linked imperial politics with local church life. This is not a private hobby of specialists. It is why the calendar still names December 3.

On this feast the Church is not only telling a story; she is keeping a school. St. Emma's legacy is marked by a remarkable transformation from a person with a violent temper to a gentle and charitable benefactor. Her conversion following the death of her husband demonstrates the power of faith to transform one's character and redirect one's life toward service to others.

Charity After Grief, Not Instead of It

Patronage listed on this site: Bremen, The Poor, Widows. Patronage is a relationship of prayer, not a charm. Ask St. Emma, then do the next just thing.

St. Emma is remembered as first lady of Bremen, great benefactor of the poor and churches. Category on our saints index: Medieval Saints. That label is a door, not a cage — martyrs teach the baptized, doctors teach the simple, virgins teach the married.

Emma's generosity toward the Church was extraordinary. She established many small parishes and made significant donations to the Bremen Cathedral, helping to build up the Church in her region. Her patronage of religious institutions helped ensure the spread of Christianity in northern Germany.

Her legendary concern for the poor set an example for other nobles of her time. In an era when the gap between rich and poor was vast, Emma used her wealth and position to help those in need, showing that true nobility lies in service to others rather than in birth or wealth.

If you only have five minutes, skip the folklore and keep the sentence: St. Emma, pray for us. Then open 1 Timothy 5 and read until you hit a line you can obey today.

She died on December 3, 1038, at Bremen. Feast December 3 with shared date traditions locally. You do not have to travel to keep December 3. The calendar brings the shrine to the parish and the parish to the table.

What This Feast Is Not

Emma of Gurk is not a gentle widow in a stained glass who never made a hard choice. Charity after grief is the memorial. Grief that never opens a house for others is not her Carinthia.

If you searched St. Emma today, keep countess of Bremen and benefactress of churches in Saxony. Skip the souvenir version. The 2026 work is still Mass if you can, Scripture, and one mercy that costs you.

Scripture for December 3

These chapters are not random captions. They are the Bible this witness still opens. Read in the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible. One chapter prayed is enough; three is a feast.

  • 1 Timothy 5 — Read this chapter as the Scripture the memorial is for, not as a caption. Widows with wealth can reshape cities through cathedral building and almsgiving.
  • Sirach 38 — Wisdom literature honors the intellect ordered to God — a fitting companion to St. Emma. Widows with wealth can reshape cities through cathedral building and almsgiving.
  • Matthew 6 — Read this chapter as the Scripture the memorial is for, not as a caption. Widows with wealth can reshape cities through cathedral building and almsgiving.

How to Celebrate December 3, 2026

  1. Go to Mass — Go to Mass if your parish keeps the optional memorial of St. Emma. Parishes may celebrate it; they are not bound to. It is not a holy day of obligation in the United States. If the parish uses another Mass, add a private collect.
  2. Read the biography at St. Emma so this page does not replace the vita.
  3. Donate to cathedral maintenance or heritage restoration in your diocese.
  4. Pray for widows managing family businesses with gospel priorities.
  5. Pray one chapter of 1 Timothy 5 in the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible.
  6. Say the invocation. Out loud: St. Emma, pray for us. Once is enough if you mean it.

If you cannot do six things, do the invocation and one merciful act. St. Emma’s whole spirituality can fit in a kitchen before midnight.

Readings and the Prayer of the Church

When this optional memorial is kept, the Missal ordinarily allows the Common of Holy Men and Women. At home, pray the chapters listed above — especially 1 Timothy 5 — then this collect. At Mass, use the official texts, not a blog’s paraphrase.

Collect. O God, who gave your Church St. Emma as Countess of Bremen and benefactress of churches in Saxony, grant that we may learn from this feast how widows with wealth can reshape cities through cathedral building and almsgiving. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The English collect of a memorial, when the Missal provides one, will be more exact than this home prayer. Use both if you need them. Trust and charity in act — not a slogan.

A Prayer You Can Use Today

"O God, who called Saint Emma to transform her life through faith and to become a great benefactor of the poor, grant us the grace to follow her example of charity and generosity. Help us to use our resources, whether great or small, to serve others and support the Church. May we, like St. Emma, find our true nobility in service to the poor and in devotion to you. "St. Emma, whose concern for the poor was legendary, intercede for all those who are in need today. Help us to see Christ in the poor and to respond with the same generosity that you showed.
