What is Confession?
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also called Confession or Penance, is one of the most beautiful gifts Jesus gave to His Church. It's the sacrament of God's mercy, where we receive forgiveness for our sins and are reconciled with God and the Church. The priest has the power to forgive sins because Jesus gave this authority to His apostles: 'Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them' (John 20:23).
Why Go to Confession?
Confession is necessary for the forgiveness of mortal sins. Even for venial sins, it's a powerful way to grow in holiness and receive God's grace. Regular confession helps us examine our conscience honestly, receive God's mercy and forgiveness, grow in self-knowledge and humility, strengthen our resolve to avoid sin, and receive spiritual guidance from the priest.
How to Make a Good Confession
Begin with an examination of conscience, taking time to reflect on your thoughts, words, and actions since your last confession. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see your sins clearly. Be truly sorry for your sins, not just because you got caught, but because you've offended God who loves you. Tell the priest all your mortal sins in kind and number, being honest and complete.
What to Confess
You must confess all mortal sins. A mortal sin is a serious sin committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent. Venial sins can also be confessed and are good to mention for spiritual growth. Common areas to examine include: the Ten Commandments, the Seven Deadly Sins, and your duties to God, others, and yourself.
Frequency of Confession
You must go to confession at least once a year if you have committed mortal sins. Many people find that monthly confession helps them grow spiritually and stay close to God. Regular confession helps us maintain a clear conscience and grow in virtue.
Overcoming Fear
Many people are afraid of confession, but priests are there to help, not to judge. They've heard everything before and are trained to be compassionate and helpful. Remember that God is waiting for you with open arms, like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son. He wants to forgive you and welcome you back.
The Joy of Forgiveness
After confession, you should feel a sense of peace and joy. You've been forgiven and reconciled with God. This is a great gift that we should never take for granted. The sacrament gives us the grace to avoid sin in the future and to grow in holiness.
