Psalms – Chapter 149

Old Testament9 Verses

1Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: let his praise be in the church of the saints.

2Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: and let the children of Sion be joyful in their king.

3Let them praise his name in choir: let them sing to him with the timbrel and the psaltery.

4For the Lord is well pleased with his people: and he will exalt the meek unto salvation.

5The saints shall rejoice in glory: they shall be joyful in their beds.

6The high praises of God shall be in their mouth: and two-edged swords in their hands:

7To execute vengeance upon the nations, chastisements among the people:

8To bind their kings with fetters, and their nobles with manacles of iron.

9To execute upon them the judgment that is written: this glory is to all his saints. Alleluia.

Reflection for Today

The late section of Psalms—Chapter 149 of 150—opens a particular moment in the story of prayer, praise, and the full range of human emotion before God.

According to Catholic teaching, the Psalms are the prayer book of the Church, prayed daily in the Liturgy of the Hours (CIC 2585-2589). This chapter especially highlights sacrificial love modeled on Christ, a theme the Catechism develops in relation to the whole of revelation (CIC 1988).

Let Psalms Chapter 149 deepen your love for the Eucharist, where the Word made flesh continues to feed His people. The same Christ who speaks in Scripture offers Himself sacramentally on the altar.
