Psalms – Chapter 1

Old Testament6 Verses

1Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the chair of pestilence:

2But his will is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he shall meditate day and night.

3And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season. And his leaf shall not fall off: and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper.

4Not so the wicked, not so: but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.

5Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: nor sinners in the council of the just.

6For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: and the way of the wicked shall perish.

Reflection for Today

Psalm 1 serves as the perfect introduction to the entire Psalter, presenting us with two distinct paths in life and their consequences. The blessed person is described as one who delights in God's law and meditates on it day and night. This is not about legalistic rule-following but about finding joy and satisfaction in God's Word and allowing it to shape every aspect of our lives.

The metaphor of the tree planted by streams of water is powerful—it speaks of stability, nourishment, and fruitfulness that comes from being deeply rooted in God's truth. This tree doesn't wither in drought because its roots reach deep into the life-giving water. Similarly, when we are rooted in God's Word, we can withstand the challenges and difficulties of life.

The contrast with the wicked, who are like chaff blown away by the wind, reminds us that a life without God's guidance is ultimately empty and unstable. This psalm calls us to examine our priorities and ask ourselves: Where do we find our delight? What do we meditate on throughout the day? The choices we make about what we think about and what we value will determine the kind of life we build and the legacy we leave.
